Categories With Mardi Gras quickly approaching (this year the celebration falls on March 4th) it is natural to envision a certain location: New Orleans.

New Orleans, or NOLA as it is commonly referred to, is a favorite vacation destination for many. With the help of the cruise industry, NOLA is climbing to the top of the tourism ladder once more after the events of Hurricane Katrina and the BP Oil Spill.

The cruise industry grew by 42.5% and passenger embarkments by 32% in 2012 alone, setting a new record according to the Cruise Line International Association. Cruise lines that partner with the city include Carnival Cruise, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines and Norwegian Cruise Lines.

New Orleans has the sixth largest cruise port in the country and is favored for its proximity to the Western Caribbean and Bahamas (30 hours by sea). Mexico and Key West are also popular destinations, and New Orleans is a launching point for various inland and river cruises as well.

Some travelers, approximately 61%, decide to keep their vacation going after their cruise and choose to extend their stay in NOLA (this is when it’s helpful to have a travel agent who can assist you with these spur of the moment changes). The number of visitors and their spending created an 11% boost from 2011 to 2012.

Consider New Orleans if you want to go on a cruise this year, want to have fun before and after you take sail, and want to help grow one of the most beloved city’s economy. Contact Sandy with any questions or to start planning your vacation today.
